Cape Cod (crew)

Poor Paul ...

So, in Cabo San Lucas, our crew went on a whale- watching cruise. We knew we were filming at the tail -end of whale season, but we were optimistic that we'd at least get a glimpse of one stinkin' whale. I'd been to Cabo a handful of times and always, always, always seen a few. Our cameraman, Paul, was especially excited because - if I remember correctly - he hadn't ever seen a whale up close. I assured him that this would be his lucky day. Not only did we not see a single whale on the cruise... , we didn't see one all week. Occasionally, one of us would shout "WHALE!" but by the time we got our bearings and set up camera, it was long gone. Obviously. Paul wasn't on the Cape Cod episode. And it's a shame, really. We went on a cruise once again - this time hoping to see some big-time whale activity. Sure enough, within minutes, we were surrounded by what the captain called "fifty or sixty" whales. They were jumping, playing, swimming under our boat, and right up on the side of it... - it was pretty much amazing. I resisted the temptation to text- message Paul about what he was missing.

The good news is I took about 200 photos while on board. So at least I'll get to share the experience a little bit. If he's anything like me, he won't take any consolation in that whatsoever. ANYWAY, later in the week, we filmed Samantha taking a ride in a glider. For those of you who don't know, it's essentially a plane with no engine that relies on wind and heat and other factors to soar through the air (after being pulled into the air by a tow-plane). To be honest, I'd rather NOT know how it works, and just take the pilot's word for it that it's safe and easy and that "thermals" means something I should know about. I just nod my head when the science happens. Samantha - being the trooper she is - climbed right in and went along for what looked like a heck of a ride. I'm not sure I'd be next in line for a trip, but we got some amazing footage.

Did you all take The Portuguese Princess out of P-Town? That's a great whale watching cruise. Glad you had fun. As for the glider ... yes, Sam is a trooper. I seem to remember her rolling down a hill once inside a huge, inflatable ball. Am I right?

I can't wait to see the Cape Cod episode. My grandparents owned a bed and breakfast (the Sunset Inn) when I was younger, and my gramma always had the *most interesting* stories. All quirkyness aside, it's really beautiful up there, and I hope you all had a great time.

Looking forward to seeing the Cape Cod episode. My wife and I took the Gloucester to P-Town Ferry last weekend. We saw about 5 whales on the return trip. The Laura leaves Gloucester at 8:30 in the morning and arrives at 11:00. She leaves P-Town at 4:30 pm and will do a little whale watching along the way. Those in Northern New England should come on over to Gloucester this weekend as the Laura will shut down for the season after Labor Day. For those interested, we have lots of whale watching companies in Gloucester, Massachusetts. They all travel with naturalist from the Whale Center of New England. Boats leave at various times during the day and trips last about four hours. See you tonight!

Sam, I am a big fan. I have been going to Chatham since the sixties, and my wife and I were there in early August. I was wondering when you were there. Keep up the great job. Bob Flanagan

    Sam,
How did you get so lucky as to have what I believe is the job of a lifetime. I am forty six and I work to travel, I am currently unemployed but It would be a dream come true to host a travel show - or to travel for a living- I have traveled extensively and nothing brings me greater joy... so where does one begin...

Any chance you will make it to Australia/New Zealand in the future? Great places and the people there would fall in love with you.

I saw your Cape Cod show along with my son who is 13. We both thought it was a great show. I am originally from R.I. and remember trips there in my youth. I asked my son where in the U.S.A. he wanted to visit this year and without hesitation he said Cape Cod like where Samantha did her show. I don't know what time of year you filmed the show, but hope we have the same luck seeing the whales. Big fans...wish you the best. Bruce Whalen

Would like to write to Samantha..... Hey Sam, I travel quite a bit myself, but mostly US. Last spring I completed my travels in the US, by traveling to Boston.. have been to every state in US and now want to travel internationally. I know you travel with a crew for the show, but have you considered a travel companion to see the sights and enjoy the crisp sunrises or sunsets? Maybe the travel channel should consider finding you a travel friend. I'm a 45 yr old Marketing Director for Pharmacy Management Software, and lot's of travel experience.

Hoping you see agree with my suggestion. Travel Safe
