Dallas
Back in Dallas. I say back because I was born here and even though I only lived here for a year and therefore have no recollection of it at all I still consider myself a little yellow rose. I have been back to Dallas a couple of times and I always enjoy it mainly because the people here a bigger than life and what the cityscape here lacks in personality the people more than make up for.
My day off falls while I am in Dallas and I am told by the hotel staff of the Katy Trail which sort of cuts thru the city on what used to be a raised railroad bed. I head out and what a little jewel this trail is that takes you passed small croppings of bamboo forests and lilac bushes all the while keeping you safe from traffic. Its such a lovely jog I outdo myself and run a lot further than I usually do, my muscles are already starting to ache and I just think "oh no" I'm sure the Texas wardrobe is going to be of the high-heeled kind. It could be a long shoot day tomorrow.
One thing we know we have to do is to create a "what I would have looked like had I grown up in Dallas look." Christina comes beyond prepared and fully passionate about my outfits. She shows up with two sexy leopard print dress, Lee Press On nails and enough hair extensions to outfit the entire Dallas cowboy cheerleading team (who turned me down, but I don't want to talk about that). Okay I will. When I was a little girl I had the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader poster and I would just stare at them and their uniforms and wish upon wish that I could be one of them. Remember the TV Specials where we got to follow the ups and downs of a few girls as they pursued their dreams during the yearly tryouts? It ended with all of them at the first game doing a dance routine to the song "If my Friends Could See Me Now."
But apparently no one but a bona fide Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader gets to wear the uniform. I wanted so badly to show them my resume which would read something like this:
Pussycat Doll
Sang back-up with Reo Speed wagon and Styx during a concert
Worked out with the Marines
Cut a song with Vince Gill
Spent day with a New York City Rockette AND wore the famous Santa Suit
Got a Pitching Lesson with John Smoltz and the Atlanta Braves
For some reason none of THESE people, franchises, brands.... WHATEVER had a problem with it. Oh well, at least now that I don't have to bare my midriff, I can have a big juicy steak...followed by an ice cream sundae.
We had a very long day that put us two hours behind. This became a problem since it was at the end of the day that we were going to create "Dallas Sam". But none of us wanted to call it quits even the fellas. Damion on sound and Alan on camera were like, "This has to happen." Poor Christina worked for a solid hour clipping in hairpieces and curling them individually to get the look. We did this in a small back room of the shooting club we were at. I didn't want to look in a mirror to watch the process I just wanted to see my transformation in one complete instant.
When she was done I looked and I didn't even recognize myself. The long hair completely changed the look of my face, and then there was the bright blue eye shadow, the fake plastic nails, the garish shiny animal print dress. It's like we did a makeover in reverse. The guys were stunned and none of us could stop laughing as we tried to film what we could in the dying sunlight. We went back to our hotel and people looked at me with such disgust-I think they thought my profession was slightly different then it was. When it was time for me to take off "the look" both Alan and Damion came over to me and asked if they could get their picture with Dallas Sam. I was like sure! Then It hit me...I had been working with Alan and Damion for a year and in that time did they ever ask to have a picture with me? Nope. I was like, now I know what look men prefer. And I ain't it. I hope no one in Dallas finds offence with Dallas Sam. It was an exaggeration to be sure; we were having a blast with an old perception perpetuated by one of the greatest shows on television. Of course I am talking about Dallas.
We are planning a trip to Buenos Aires in August and just saw your blog posting today. We're from Big D (born and raised, and now raising our family here) and we like the "original" Sam much better than the Dallas version...although we reckon she aint too bad herself;)
Yes the un-done Sam is much better...but that's hilarious!
My wife and I moved to Dallas from Canada and it took a while to get used to it. But now we love Dallas. It really is larger-than-life. There just isn't any other place in the World like Dallas. Don't get me wrong, I love the Sam that we all know and love from your tv shows, but your welcome to be a Texas girl anytime! I guess being born here allows you to have the natural "cowgirl" instinct.
I have lived in Dallas for 40 yrs. and that is not the Dallas I know. Dallas is modern, great museums, great chefs, fun bars. I have never shot a gun or rode in a truck. And we are pretty but you made fun of us.
Just watched your Dallas episode. I have been watching you for awhile and never realized you are from NH! I live in NV now but grew up in Wolfeboro, NH. As much as you have traveled I am sure NH still holds a special place in your heart! Growing up there was a great experience for me!
Fort Worth is not Dallas' "sister" city! Amon Carter just did flip flops in his grave. Otherwise, good job on Dallas show.
I am so impressed that you are from my hometown. I love it here and I have traveled many different places.
My question is how can I be you when I grow up??
Please, make a big correction on your pronunciation of pecans. It is not pea-can, but pa-con. I grew up in Atlanta, and pecan pie is a southern tradition not just a Texas one. I now live in the DFW area and was so disappointed in the Dallas show.
Hey Pam, Growing up in NH as well as Samantha I can tell you that Potato, Patato. Peacan is how us NH folk say it.
Well we're sure glad you made it back thisa way. You look mighty dapper in your getup, but definitely does not do us modern Dallasites any justice. No offense taken though since I don't wear weave or fake nail. You know what we say here about folks poking fun? "Don't Mess With Texas"
I have to agree that the Dallas show was very disappointing. I have never shot a gun, I don't ride horses, wear hair extensions, or consider Ft. Worth Dallas. Dallas has so many things to offer. I don't know anyone who owns a cowboy hat with the Texas flag painted on it. I felt the show was insulting and in no way a representation of the real Dallas.
You're hawt!
Please let me know when this show is on again, because that's the day my cable went out PLEASE
I really enjoy watching you and was happy you returned to Dallas. I really was so disappointed in how you portrayed our city. We have a sense of humor, however you really did insult us. We do have big personalities, however,we have some of the most beautiful, strong women in the world, an exiting, modern art scene, more great restaurants per capita then NYC, great club scenes, and we are not Fort Worth with longhorns in the street. Please come back and discover how a real yellow rose lives in Big D.
Dallas is the armpit of the US. The only thing good about it is seeing it in your rear view mirror as you drive away. Hot, materialistic with a dead downtown. Abandon former music row of deep elum. I bet big D is still pushing the "west end" as some sort of cutting edge hip hangout. It's big hair, fake n bake tans and a whole lot of nothing in between. After 25 years of living there I wised up and made my move to a real town...Chicago
Hi Sam! What a wonderful Dallas show! I think we all had as much fun watching it as you all had creating it. I must say, the Dallas Sam was a cute idea, but the real thing is MUCH better!
P.S. - Some of these people's posts are sure downers. Don't pay any attention, Sam! Take us anywhere you'd like - I'm just happy to travel with 'ya!
I love Dallas! I lived there my entire life and now live in Naples, Florida! I am so excited you went to Dallas! But I have to say we do not all shoot guns, go hunting, have big hair, we are not all snobby! Texas people are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet!
Ummmmm, I thought your back home to DALLAS show could have been a little bit more adventureous...I liked the bit about the motorcycle gang and the DEBUTANTE induction but there is so much more to do and see in DALLAS than hanging out with truckers in another city all together and also going to the STOCKYARDS in FT.WORTH which has absolutely NOTHING to do with BIG D. I do however like the STOCKYARDS but I would have visited SUNDANCE SQUARE in downtown FT.WORTH as well if you are going to make this a FT.WORTH show instead of DALLAS. MY suggestion for a DALLAS show would be to check out the clubs in DEEP ELLUM and the WEST END MARKETPLACE and so many other exciting things to do in DALLAS (like shopping at THE GALLERIA) besides standing in the rain waiting for a trucker to pick you up so you can talk on a CB radio. I still LOVE you and your show and want to be your next husband.
I absolutely adore your shows. I enjoyed this one but not quite as much as the former ones. That was only because I felt like you didn't visit enough of the attractions that would appeal to lots of vacationers. I am from Baton Rouge, LA and although southern I am not interested in the country aspects of certain cities. Lots of these cities have mainstream and modern activities that some us of would have liked to have known about. I just felt like there could have at least been a "happy medium".
Hi there Sam! I gotta say the Dallas episode was not as bad as everyone else said. I was working in Corsicana when you blew into town and actually made you a cup of coffee when you were at Two Doors Down if you remember. I just got to say that you made front page news on the paper haha! Anyway, I am kind of dissapointed that this episode didn't show Two Doors Down or Blackjack's Saloon were I remember you said you ate at in the paper. I do have to admit though the peacan pie station in Powell is pretty good. Anyway I hope y'all had fun in our little town!
Your Dallas show was spot on! Dallas IS the epitome of Texas stereotypes!
After 25 years of living there I wised up and made my move to a real town...Chicago
DFW - no character, no beauty, anti-green out of touch with reality, no efficient public transportation, a lot of pollution and poverty. Other words light years behind even central European cities!
I completely agree with Redshoe! I lived in Dallas for a time and found it to be one of the most charmless cities in the US, not to mention hot, materialistic, flat, ugly and baron. BUT, while Dallas has a huge personality-less society set, the regular folks are some of the most down-to-earth, friendly and decent people I've every been around.
So I just saw the Dallas episode where you were at the rodeo and that just put the icing on the cake for me. Any chance you might be accepting applications for a Prom date "Baby Doll Brown"? If you're not going to a Prom anythime soon, I'm pretty flexible, for you I'd be any kind of date. : )
Let me know....
XOXO!
